Bitcoin ATMs are gradually becoming commonplace. Currently, there are over 5,000 Bitcoin Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in the world. Africa is home to just a few of these ATMs while a majority of them can be found in the United States. According to Coin ATM Radar, Bitcoin ATMs in the United States of America alone are 3558. Many factors limit the penetration of Bitcoin ATMs in Africa including the high cost of these Machines. However, we will be looking at Countries where Bitcoin ATMs are situated in the African continent.
The highest concentration of Bitcoin ATMs can be found in South Africa. The country has proven to be a leader in bitcoin adoption and owns six cryptocurrency ATMs. These digital assets ATMs can be found in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Nelspruit. However, these ATMs only provide fiat-to-crypto services and transaction fee is sometimes on the high side. These factors do not make Bitcoin ATMs a go to option for the people.
Zimbabwe is home to just one Bitcoin ATM and it is run by Golix. The cryptocurrency exchange which happens to be the first exchange in Zimbabwe runs the only Bitcoin ATM in the country which is located in Harare. Zimbabwe has been experiencing hyperinflation and these Bitcoin machines provide the much needed financial service for the country.
The first Bitcoin ATM in East Africa was installed in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The digital asset machine which was installed in 2018 is operated by BitClub Network. The ATM is capable of carrying out transactions worth 500 Kenyan Shillings at a minimum. However, it is only able to carry out fiat-to-crypto transactions.
There is only one place you can find a Bitcoin ATM in Uganda and it is situated at the Kampala Post Office. A local blockchain company, KIPYA Bit2Big is in charge of the machine. Ugandan residents can purchase Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ether from the ATM.
This small East African country has its only Bitcoin ATM situated at Appart Hôtel Moulk. Although Group DOS, the ATM operator in Djibouti has plans to install more ATMs in the country, it is yet to be achieved.
This West African country has one Bitcoin ATM machine in Accra at Thunder Solutions Limited – General Bytes. The ATM was installed on June 13, 2019.
Botswana also has one Bitcoin ATM machine in Gaborone at Airport Junction Mall – Lamassu. The digital assets machine was installed on March 1, 2019. The fiat-to-crypto machine allows users to feed money into the machine, scan the QR code for their wallet address to purchase Bitcoin. The crypto equivalent automatically assigned to their wallets.
